This could be so many things. One scenario is oil dripping onto the exhaust somewhere, and burning off. Another possibility is the brake pad and rotors have worn to the point where there is metal on metal contact, and need to be replaced. A burning smell can come from clutches as well when the operator is shifting improperly, or drifting the clutch excessively. Rarely, the engine could be overheating from a coolant system failure. Also, this could be caused from spark plug wires or other hanging leads resting on the exhaust manifold, and thus melting.
