It's a warning call. It's to alert other chinchillas in the area to flee. However, I have found that chinchillas sometimes have "bad dreams" where they bark in their sleep.

What Are Chinchillas Friends?

Chinchillas are usually friendly, unless you don't give them a lot of attention. They are independent, but during the daytime will let you pet them. They are nocturnal, so its hard to hold them at night because they're so jumpy. It's best to get a chinchilla that's a baby, and them give them a lot of attention so that they will like you. If they like you, then they will be more friendly and it will be easier to hold them.
