Because foxes are carnivores they generally prey on small rodents such as mice, rabbits, squirrels, moles, etc. A lot of these small rodents live on a diet comprised mainly of grass. Without grass there would not be many of these rodents and therefore, hardly anything for the fox to eat.

When you look at a food pyramid, Any first level consumer that lives on land needs to eat a producer. This is mostly some kind of plant. Without it the animal that eats it won't be able to survive. If that animal dies then the fox will not survive because its food supply is gone.

The red fox serves to keep down the population of small rodents such as mice and rabbits. They also help to spread seeds around by eating them and then excreting them in different locations.

A fox is a multi-vore- like a bear. Many folks say omnivore, but even sharks don't eat everything. Foxes eat berries, small animals and birds and assorted scraps stolen from tourists.
