When you become active, you need more of oxygen and nutrition for muscle cells. So heart pumps more blood to meet the requirement.

It beats slower because it does not need to get blood to other parts of the body as fast as if you were working out

Because you aren't active in your sleep therefore the heart doesn't have to work as hard. When you're sleep it's called the nocturnal dip. I believe your heart rate dips about 10%.
