Why does a queen ant have wings and the drones and workers dont?

The queen honey bee usually leaves its nest only twice in its life. The first occasion is when she is about five days old and leaves the colony on a mating flight. The only other time that she might leave the colony is if they decide to swarm and she will fly with about half of the bees in the colony and go and look for a new home. She needs wings to do both of these things.

∙ 11y agoWe use the word "drones" for male social bees, not ants. Male ants we simply call "male ants". In fact, male ants generally do have wings and can fly, though, like drones, they do not generally live long after mating. Queen ants and male ants of most species need wings because in most species they have to leave the nest to find unrelated mates, and must set up colonies not too close to home.
Worker ants on the other hand, have no need to find new homes; their job is to find food and bring it back, and to work in the nest, protect and feed the young and the queen and can generally work live and die in the colony, often underground or in enclosed tunnels and cavities. For this they do not need wings, and wings would actually be encumbrances. All ant workers accordingly have no wings.
