A racoon will move to different locations for one of two reasons.

1. Food (self explanatory)

2. Territory (Racoons are "clannish", meaning they stick together in family clans. If one clan encounters another in it's territory, the weaker of the two clans will be forced to find a new territory to inhabit.)

Except for chickens and other poultry, raccoons rarely attack larger domestic animals unless the animal initiates the aggression. Raccoons usually avoid confrontations with dogs or larger cats.

If a raccoon has become imprinted on humans as a source of food they might approach a person. This is why it is highly recommended not to feed wild animals. They become accustomed to obtaining food from humans and do not use their own foraging skills. In some jurisdictions it is against the law to feed wildlife.
