The earth has a greenhouse effect that keeps the planet warm. This is natural, supported by the carbon and water cycles, and has been going on for millions of years.
Greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane from human activities mean the earth is experiencing an enhanced, or accelerated greenhouse effect which is causing global warming.
The greenhouse gasses in the Earth's atmosphere trap the solar radiation coming from the Sun. So instead of all that solar radiation being able to bounce back into outer space, it gets trapped at the surface of the planet. All of the trapped heat adds up and causes the average temperatures of the planet to rise drastically.
Because there is a natural lag in the effect. The greenhouse gases we emit today will still be causing warming for many years time, so even if all emissions stopped today, the greenhouse effect will still continue increasing.
It redirects more infrared radiation back to the Earth's surface.
The greenhouse effect is a natural process that keeps the Earth warm. Without it, the earth would be unable to retain enough heat to sustain life. The enhanced greenhouse effect is caused by the all the extra greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane etc) that we put into the air from burning fossil fuels and agriculture (cattle belches). These all trap more heat and radiation from the sun than is normally required. The earth radiates infrared energy from the sunlight that reaches the surface which should escape off into space, but due to the enhanced greenhouse effect, this radiation is trapped. Therefore, the overall temperature of the globe rises.See this link below for a diagram:Global warming is the increase of the average temperature of the earths atmosphere due to the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is caused by high concentrations of methane, co2 and water vapour in the earth's atmosphere . These gases occur naturally (natural greenhouse effect) however due to human activity (cars, burning fossil fuels, deforestation) more of these gases are released, and this enhances the greenhouse effect (so it is called the enhanced greenhouse effect.)
The sun ray's are most responsible for Earth's surface temperature.
the external remparture of the earth is much lower than the temperature far beneath the earths surface
it helps the scientists to predict future changes.
The Earths Equatorial diameter is 12756 km, and there are (on average) 149,597,890 km to the sun, so we are talking about 11728 Earths.
It raises the temperature and makes it hotter through the greenhouse effect.

Global. Warming
global warming is the increase in the average temperature of earths near surface :D
Due to the Greenhouse Effect, Earth's temperature is continually rising. If the trend does not change, the Earth's annual temperature will continue to rise, causing significant ecological problems.

The atmosphere. The ozone layer absorbs UV radiation, and atmosphere also controls temperature through the greenhouse effect, which allows the earth's temperature to be suitable for life. If there was no greenhouse effect then the earths average temperature would be -14oC instead of the actual 15oC.

Of course, greenhouse gases keep the Earth from being one large popsicle. The newest studies of the atmosphere indicate that the atmosphere is pretty stable, now. The reason is that nearly all of the greenhouse gases are water vapor mostly evaporated from the oceans.
Using excessive fossil fuels leads to release of greenhouse gases that trap sunlight in the atmosphere that increase the temperature of earth. This is known as Global Warming.
