Over the past couple hundred years, the orchestra added more winds and brass. As such, more strings were needed for everything to be in balance.

Wind instruments are generally louder than string instruments, so larger numbers of strings are needed to keep the ensemble properly balanced.

What are two high sounding instruments that would need to be written in a treble stave?

piano and a string in orchestra such as viola or violin, hope this helped :)

Violinist who sits at the front near the conductor?

String instruments sit at the front of the orchestra because of the volume/intensity of the sound that they are able to produce compared to the brass, woodwind, and percussion. If the strings were to be placed behind the band, then the audience would have a hard time hearing the string instruments, because band instruments generally produce louder sounds than string instruments. It is because of the volume balance that sometimes even the string instruments are rearranged. In example, sometimes the violas and the cellos switch places because the cellos play to softly, or because the violas play too loudly, or because of both.

Why does the number of violins in an orchestra vary?

Because unlike winds and brass in which there is a set number of parts, i.e. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trumpet, the 1st and 2nd violin parts only very generally convey the composer's means, and most composers will say a large or small string section depending on what they have in mind, but composers rarely have a set number of string parts in their head, as opposed to winds or brass because violins don't carry as well in the context of the orchestra. Background (kinda): There can be anywhere from 1 to like 100 violin players in an orchestra. There are usually 2 parts (1st and 2nd violin) and they split it half 1st half 2nd. Sometimes there are like 5 different violin parts. Actual answer: The reason they vary is generally because of how many people are in the orchestra and they just split it. Also it is because of how loud the conductor wants the violins to be

How do you microphone a live orchestra?

That depends on the sort of orchestra you want to record and what sound you indend to get. Are some or all musical instruments amplified or is it an unaplified symphony orchestra? How many persons are playing. Should it sound natural or artificial like all rock bands do? There are much more questions before there are some answers. For a stereo recording you need at least two microphones.

The only way to fix a string that broke at the peg is to replace it carefully with a new string. Your teacher or orchestra director can do this for you, or you can take your instrument to a reputable shop.In almost all cases, a broken string cannot be repaired, it has to be replaced with a new string.
