Autism has a genetic component, so, in a sense, a person is born with it. However, it is also thought that environmental factors might trigger further development of autism, since genetics cannot predict which children in families with autism will show symptoms of autism. Please note that these environmental factors are not related to how a parent raises a child, but could be due to a childhood illness, exposure to an allergen, and other events that occur for many children.

The symptoms of autism might not be noticeable when the child is a baby. If the child has a less severe case of autism, the symptoms might not be noticeable until after the child has started school and might be diagnosed as a different condition initially.

It doesn't. Almost certainly Autism begins before conception, as there are strong genetic predispositions to autism and it may also be triggered by the pre-natal environment. Autism is generally diagnosed at around the age of 3, as it is a condition which can affect language development and the ability to relate to others - all of which develop fast in the first years of life in non-autistic children. Its when they fail to develop normally that questions are raised. This gives rise to the feeling among many grieving parents that they had a "normal child" until some event around the age of two and a half to three and a half "made them become autistic". However, workers in the field claim that they can identify autism in these apparently "normal" babies in family videos taken long before their diagnosis. Better understanding of what's called the "Autism spectrum" means that many people are diagnosed with autism late in life: a woman I know recognised that she was autistic at the age of 32 after having seen a documentary about it (her mother watched the same documentary in another city and came to the same conclusion about her).

Usually, parents will often notice that their children may have started to speak some words, then quite saying words. Often children who have autism have decreased eye contact or no eye contact at all. Sometimes, they can be rigid in their thinking and what they want. There are great resources such as your local school district our county Early Intervention programs that can help you in sorting out what concerns you about your child's development and help you with ideas in understanding your child's behavior and development. Good luck!

The symptoms of autism always appear early in development. Many children show symptoms of autism by 12 months to 18 months of age:

  • Problems with eye contact
  • No response to his or her name
  • Problems following another person's gaze or pointed finger to an object (or "joint attention")
  • Poor skills in pretend play and imitation
  • Problems with nonverbal communication
