Did you mean "Why does a lightning bolt go to the Earth ? " Because it's the shortest way to this kind of electricity to go. If an asteroid passes near two clouds charged positively and negatively, the lightning bolt will go towards the asteroid and not to the earth.

∙ 9y agoThe ground is a common electrical point, to which one side of all circuits are connected.
Even on a vehicle, where there is no ground connection, the body of the vehicle is the ground and in that case the negative side of the 12 v power system is connected to it.
So anything connected to the positive side will find that the current will take every opportunity to flow through it to the ground if possible.
Using a ground system is a good safety feature if every item of equipment has its case connected to the ground, so that it will not be possible to have an electric shock by touching two pieces of equipment simultaneously.
In a house, the ground wire is connected to all items of equipment, and for additional safety the ground wire is not a current-carrying conductor in normal operation of the supply.
