It's supposed to compensate idle for added load, most all cars do that when ac is on as well ECU adds about 50 rpm to prevent stalling.

Why does your RPM increase when your car is in Park?

AnswerThe RPM is related to the load on the motor. When you have the Transmission engaged it puts a load on the motor. When it is in park, it does not put a load on the motor. That allows the RPM to increase. AnswerThe computers in some cars are programmed to increase the engine speed when certain accessories are turned on, i.e. when the air conditioner clutch engages. This ensures that the engine does not stall with the added load, and that the engine maintains a high enough speed to keep the alternator generating adequate current to maintain system voltage. If the increase in RPM is happening just as you put the transmission into Park, it is because the transmission is no longer putting a load on the engine.Turning off high current accessories can also cause the engine speed to increase slightly.

What causes hunting on an x reg focus 1.8 petrol engine?

If you mean hunting at idle, the problem is caused by the idle speed being set too high or the idle switch is not properly adjusted. When the throttle is closed as indicated by the idle switch the fuel is cut off by the fuel cut solenoid until the engine speed drops below a preset speed. If the engine speed is higher than that speed and the idle switch is closed there is no fuel for the engine, thus the engine speed drops. When it drops below the preset speed the fuel is turned on and the engine speed goes back up.

What does a Idle speed control solenoid do?

The idle speed control solenoid controls the idle of the engine when the air conditioning is engaged. Since the ac pump draws down the engine idle the solenoid increase the idle when the ac is on.
