The rate of diffusion of a gas is inversely related to the molecular weight of that gas. The lighter the gas, the faster it diffuses. Hydrogen is the lightest of all gases having a molecular weight of only 2. Thus it diffuses faster than all others.

Why do some gases travel faster than others?

some gases travel faster than other gases due to the gases density and the energy of the medium that the gase is traveling through.

In what material does sound travel through the fastest?

There are too many 'materials' to list but generally, sound travels faster in solids than in liquids, and faster in liquids than in gases. In other words, the denser the material, the faster sound travels.

Is air made up of gases?

Yes, air is made up of many gases, the composition of dry air is as follows; 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, 0.9% Argon, and 0.04% Carbon dioxide. Many others gases that make up less than 0.01% of air include; Neon, Helium, Methane, Krypton, Hydrogen, Nitrous oxide, Xenon, Ozone, Nitrogen dioxide, Iodine, Carbon monoxide, and Ammonia.

Why does sound travel faster in humid air?

Sound will travel a little bit faster in humid air (about 0.1% to 0.6% faster) than it does in dry air. Follow along and we'll see why. Air is mostly nitrogen and oxygen. Nitrogen and oxygen travel around with "buddy" atoms - they are diatomic molecules - they are N2 and O2. Humid air contains water molecules, little H2O molecules. The H2O molecules are lighter than are the N2 and O2 molecules they will displace in air. And "lighter" gases carry sound faster than "heavier" gases. Helium will transmit sound faster than "regular air" will. (The rule of thumb is that low molecular weight gases transmit sound faster than higher molecular weight gases.) That's it in a nutshell. Wikipedia has an article on the speed of sound where this and other questions similar to it are answered. Read that article and you'll be 0.6% to 0.7% smarter. (Possibly.) You need a link, and because this is WikiAnswers, we got one for you.

Are gases conductors?

No. Gases are not good conductors of electricity nor heat (compared to other states of matter.)
