If you have sprained your ankle previously you may have already completely ruptured the ligament (ATF ligament, likely). Subsequent experiences of rolling your ankle may result in rupturing blood vessels (leading to swelling/bruising) but little pain because there is no ligament left to actually sprain. That, and you are likely quite lax in the ankle joint, meaning it happens easily.
cause your tough
A sprained ankle can hurt one person and not another. It just depends on a few things. First, it can depend on how sensitive you are to pain. My brother broke his arm in 3 places and did not cry, and when I fell off my bike and scraped my knee I was crying. There are 3 types of sprained ankles: grade 1, grade 2, and grade 3. If you get a grade 1 ankle, you typically will have a little pain, swelling, and tenderness. With grade 1, the ligament is stretched or the fibers of the ligaments are ripped a little. You can tolerate putting your weight on it. With grade 2, some of the fibers are torn but not all of them so there is a big increase in pain, swelling, and tenderness. You usually will have difficulty putting pressure on that ankle. Grade 3 is the worse. The ligament is torn, and you can't put weight on it without a lot of pain. There is a lot of swelling and tenderness. You will need to stay off it (though you should stay off of any sprained ankle). Remember RICE (Rest (stay off of it), Ice (20-30min), Compression (Ace bandage), and Elevation (for first 48 hours)). A broken or fractured ankle/ foot can free the same as a sprained ankle (there are similar symptoms), so it can be quite painful to have a sprained ankle.
If the pain is gradually diminishing over time, don't worry - it will heal. A lot of it depends on your age. When I was 18, I sprained my ankle three times in that one year. It took no longer than two weeks to heal each time. When I was 50, I badly sprained my ankle again. It took five months before the pain was completely gone. If you are a young person, and it still hurts after two months, talk to a doctor. If you are past forty - give it time.
Could be a lot of bad things. Time to see the doctor.
My best friend has Crohns and suffers from a lot of joint pain and swelling in her joints.
that's not a question
Ice and elevate are the general things, but rubbing your ankle towards your heart (starting from the foot and going up) will help remove the swelling from the area, even though it may hurt. Also, you may want to keep it tightly wrapped in an Ace bandage (but not too tightly!)
It depends on what type of injury that you have. There are some types of injuries that you're able to deal with on your own, and then there are some types of injuries that you would need to have someone look at. An example of a situation that does not usually need help You have twisted your ankle, and there is hardly any swelling, and the ankle is fairly sore, but you can still put weight on it. If this is the case for this one, then all you need to do is to apply some cold on it, and then wait for a little while, if it doesn't get better then seek treatment. An example that needs emergent help. You have twisted your ankle, and it is turning black and blue, the swelling is extreme, and your in a lot of pain. This shows there could be another injury in connection with the sprain.
WOMEN who are pregnant or have been. ... past couple weeks I have noticed a lot of swelling down there, no pain(uncomfortable thats it) and real puffy tissues on each side. ...
A tightening around the ankle usually indicates swelling. Swollen ankles are common for those who walk or stand a lot. Feet and ankles that stay swollen for long periods of time, or are accompanied by other symptoms should be checked by a physician.
Rest the sprained joint by keeping weight off of it. Ice the sprain with an ice pack. Apply a compression bandage Elevate the sprain above heart level for the first 48 hours.
possibly. Ask your phsycian. If you have been on it a lot and not icing, then the initial swelling may have settled in your ankle. Your shin is the hardest area to break in the body, so it may be longest healing wise.
