Why did Belle return Scrooge's ring?

Because Belle realises that Scrooges only love has turn to money (a Gold idle). She confronts him with "would you seek me out of I were poor?". Scrooge doesn't answer confirming that he would not have.

Belle was betrothed to Ebenezer. However, as their engagement moved on Ebenezer's fixation with making money overtook his care and attention to Belle. Ebenezer had become engrossed in making money to prove he was successful. Belle saw this and realised that when they were both poor Ebenezer was a different person, loving and caring but now he was hardening and she rebuked him saying "Would you have sought me out now if I were poor?". Ebenezer failed to answer as he knew that had she been poor he would not have given her a second glance. This attitude overflows in the conversation on Christmas Eve that Fred has with the elder Scrooge who accuses him of being a fool to marry for love not money
