Well, i would think it's because gold is a more rare gem and it has more uses. There is a higher demand for gold than for lead, and gold is very precious because of its rarity.

Because Lead is worth about 10 cents an ounce, Gold is worth $1,100 per ounce...The sad irony is that if it was easy to change Lead into Gold then Gold would become worthless as it would become as common as Lead
