OK first the check engine light had to be on or service soon light the first if they did a intake manifold work may be is leaking air or false air but if the car has more 50000 miles is time to change the fuel filter the car is running lean means low on fuel it means the engine don't get enough gas because the restriction on the fuel filter..
Your catalytic converter is clogged and that is the reason it is getting red hot. It can also be caused by a miss on one or more cylinders allowing raw fuel to enter the converter and burn.
