Dolphins use echo location mainly to search for food. They will send out the sound and once it hits the fish, the sound waves bounce back to the dolphin forming a picture for them. As soon as they receive the click they send out another to measure the distance. With echo location a dolphin can determine size, shape, and distance of an object.

Actually, dolphins use it, yes to search for food, but also to see objects from hundreds of yards away, so they can swim round them. They can determine the following of an object using echolocation:

Size, Shape, Distance, Speed, Direction and Internal Structure(depening on the object,)

Echolocation is a type of sonar, using reflected sound to determine the distance and form of objects. A dolphin emits a short, directional series of clicking sounds forward (in the direction of its "forehead") and receives the echo from these sounds in fat-filled glands in the lower jaw. The dolphin's brain interprets these echoes to determine the location of objects such as rocks, or fish, and this is especially valuable in shallow, murky water.

Dolphins use echolocation to track down their food and warn others of danger. Like for instance, a ship is catching dolphins, or a predator is sighted. Those are times when dolphins use echolocation.

Dolphins used echo location with a special gland in front of the brain called the melon. When a dolphin wants to use echo location it sends out a series of vibrations. When the vibrations return the dolphin can tell what they hit by how high or low the frequency is.

When dolphins use echo location, the vibrations spread out in different locations. If the vibration hit something, it'll rebound back to the dolphin.
