The lower the sun in the sky, the longer the shadow. A shadow is always cast in the opposite direction of incident sunlight. When the sun is directly overhead (at noon) the shadow is shortest.

The closer to the lamp post you are the steeper is the angle that the light striking you, so your shadow is shorter. As you walk away, the light strikes you at a shallower angle, so your shadow lengthens.

What did you notice about the shape of the shadow compare to the shape of the object?

The shape does not change, only the length, depending on where the light comes from. Such as on a sundial, and the shadow gets longer or shorter over hours.

Does the length of a sun stick control the distance a shadow moves?

yes the length of the sun stick does control the distance the shadow moves

Why does the shadow change during the day?

Shadows are created when something comes between the Sun and the surface upon which the shadow is cast. So if you draw a straight line from the Sun's position in the sky and on through the object that's casting the shadow, you will find that the shadow occurs where the straight line intersects that surface. Let's call that straight line the line of shadow (LOS). And it goes Sun to object, to surface where the shadow lies. But wait, the shadow is moving, very very slowly but it is moving. Remember the LOS determines where the shadow lies upon the surface. So something is changing with the LOS. And that something is the Sun's position in the sky. The Sun rises higher in the sky before noon and sags lower in the sky after noon (approximately). As it rises and lowers, the angle at which the LOS intersects the surface and casts that shadow changes to made the shadow shorter as the Sun lifts and longer as the Sun sets. Bottom line: shadows caused by the Sun change during the day because the position of the Sun in the sky changes from low to high, back to low during the day. And that changes the LOS angle onto the shadowed surface.

What is silhouette of your friend's head using a projector can you change the size of the shadow?

The closer the light source is to the friend, the bigger the shadow will be. The further the projector is from the wall where you are projecting, the bigger the shadow will be.

What is the length of the shadow at midday?

It's determined by the height (angle above the horizon) of the Sun, and the physical height of the object throwing the shadow. The height of the Sun at midday is 90 degrees minus the latitude plus the Sun's declination of the day, which varies by up to ±23.5 degrees through the year. The length of the shadow is the height of the object divided by the tangent of the Sun's height. Example, a 6 ft object at 50 degrees north on June 21: height of the object is 6 ft, divided by tan(90 - 50 + 23.5) so the shadow has a length of 3 ft.

Why does the length and position of my shadow change as I walk towards a lamppost and away from the lamppost?

Light leaves the lamp and travels in straight lines from its point source. As you move away from the source, the angle between you and the light changes and this the length and position of your shadow changes.

How does the position of the sun in the sky relate to the length of the shadow cast by an object?

The position of the sun relates to the length of the shadow cast by an object because, when the sun is above the object there is no shadow yet, when the sun is say to the east of the object a shadow is cast towards the west, the farther the sun for example east the longer the shadow will be towards the west.

What is the direction of someone's shadow at 10am?

Usually somewhere towards the west. However, the exact length and direction of the shadow depend on your exact geographical position (both latitude and longitude), and on the time of year.

Why when the length and position of my shadow changes as i walk towards a light source and when i walk away from the lamp post?

If the direction from which the light comes changes, then the direction of the shadow changes as well. The shadow basically points away from the light source.

How can you tell time from shadows?

If you place yourself on the equator at a the time of an equinox, then at mid day your shadow falls directly under your feet because the Sun is directly above you. As the Sun rises to this position and set form it, you shadow will fall to one side of you and the length of this shadow will depend on the height of the Sun in the sky, the shorter it is the higher the sun will be. Thus from the length and position of your shadow you can tell what time it is. Long shadows happen in the morning or evening and short shadows happen towards mid day.

How does the length of a shadow change during the yearwhy does this happen?

The length of the shadow (on a flat, horizontal floor) depends on the height of the Sun. If the Sun is higher in the sky, the shadow will become shorter.

Does the position of your shadow change from time to time?

Yes! The posistion of your shadow depends on two things: *The Sun *Your location So even you don't move, the sun will; and this will still change your shadow.

At what time is the shadow in front of you?

The shadow is in front of you when the sun is behind you, typically in the late morning or early afternoon. The length and direction of the shadow will vary depending on the position of the sun in the sky.
