It is due to the Late Heavy Bombardment , billions of years ago,
which when all the planets and moons came to form, alot of matter clumped together , but remained some around the gas giants, due to their early gravity instability, they later flung countless asteroids toward the inner solar system, Callisto must have survived the bombardment one way or another, with a couple battle scars to show it! it's the same way our moon acquired it's craters. callisto is one of the most cratered moons in the solar system!
Craters on the moon are not volcanic, they are impact craters.
For 300 years scientists thought that craters on the moon have been caused by volcanoes, but they are actually made by meteors crashing onto the moon's surface The moon is our satellite. As such it acts as a deflector for meteors and other space stuff that may come into our orbit! That is why the moon has so many craters as it is constantly being battered. The craters were caused mainly by impacts by objects from space.
Same as Jupiter, since Callisto is a moon of Jupiter.
To look like Earth's Moon, another moon would have to be grey and have areas of dark other colors and have many craters. Ganymede, Callisto, Titania, Oberon, Iapetus, and Ariel have those characteristics.
Jupiter has 63 satellites/moons. But it has 4 large one known as: 1. Ganymede (largest in the Solar System) 2. Io (most geologically active body in the Solar System) 3. Europa (has ice and rocks on its surface) 4. Callisto (contains many craters)
Maybe "Callisto", because it has lots of craters. Also, "Ganymede" looks like the Moon. It has craters and smoother areas where ice covers many craters. Unlike our Moon, it is the darker areas that have the most obvious craters.
They are also referred to as moons. Jupiter has many but the largest ones are Ganymede, Io, Europa, and Callisto.
There are hundreds. Probably the most obvious is the Barringer Meteor Crater in Winslow, Arizona, USA, but there are craters all over. Many of them are so old and so enormous that we didn't realize they were ancient craters until we saw satellite photos of them.

There are 375 craters in the moon.....
