When his uncle, Bilbo Baggins, leaves his home on his 111th birthday to travel one last time and finish his book (He heads towards Rivendell to stay with the Elves) he leaves all his possessions to Frodo, including the house, Bag End and the Ring of power...therefore kickstarting Frodo's journey with the help of Gandalf the Grey and the rest of the Fellowship to ensure the ring of power is destroyed
So that Frodo will become corrupt like Gollum and become his servant and hand the ring over to him.

They want to take the ring out of good will but the ring uses them and turns them evil, if they have the ring for too long they can become like Gollum. Some people, like Frodo, are less susceptible to the rings powers, but they are still tempted. The ring uses people to get back to it's master Sauron so that he can rise again.

He forgives Bilbo for stealing the Arkenstone, and then tells Bilbo that everyone should be like the hobbits: more concerned with comfort than with treasure. Then Thorin dies. He is buried with the Arkenstone, and Dain, Thorin's cousin, is proclaimed the new king.

Thorin was dying, he had been mortally wounded in the Battle of Five Armies. He wanted to make his peace with Bilbo before he died. Bilbo was found and brought to him just in time.
