Cyanide products. Gas will have a burnt almond smell but, if you can smell it, chances are your about to die!
If this is _only_ after initial cold startup and goes away after a few seconds, ignore this smell along with any knocking noises you may also observe. It's a Chevy thing. Enjoy the nice ride and long life of the vehicle.
There should be 2, one before and after the converter. Not sure on the no-start. But assuing it is a 3.1 motor, there may be coolant leaking fromt the intake manifold gasket or dummy shaft plug.
depending on the type of gas. it can be denser than oxygen and stay in your lungs longer, or just in general it sufficates you by not allowingoxygen to enter you lungs. or it could be poisinous
