The main reason a car misfires is because the spark plug wires are not installed correctly. Check the car's firing order to ensure the spark plug wires running from the distributor cap to the spark plugs (in the cylinders) are in the right order. One or more spark plugs could be damaged or worn so the firing order is correct, but the spark plugs are not sparking into the spark plug wires to ignite the engine.

A blinking check engine light indicates an engine cylinder misfire has been detected
Code P0301 on a 2001 Ford Mustang indicates a misfire in cylinder 1 of the engine. This can be caused by various issues, such as faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, fuel injectors, or even compression problems in the cylinder. Diagnosing the exact cause typically involves checking these components and may require further testing to identify the specific issue leading to the misfire. Addressing the misfire promptly is important to prevent potential engine damage and performance issues.

Rent a compression tester from Auto Zone and read on how to perform a compression test. Eric The Car Guy on YouTube has a great tutorial on it. Post this question on mustang specific websites like Stangnet.com Good luck!
