The PS3 that you are using may not be one of them that have designed to play them. The 20 GB PS3 could play PS2 games and so could the 60 GB model that was released with it and those machines are called the first generation PS3 Models. The second Generation PS3 model were the 60 GB Model and the 80 GB model and while they could play the PS2 games it was based on Partially software-based PS2 emulation while the earlier models were Hardware-based PS2 emulation. These 1st and 2nd generation PS3 models all included 4 USB ports and also had Flash memory card readers. The 3rd generation of PS3 models had the 40 GB, the 80 GB, and the 160 GB Harddrives but only 2 USB ports and do not play PS2 games with backward compatibility. The fourth Generation of PS3s are the 120 GB and 250 GB PS3 slim model which do not play PS2 games with Backward Compatibility. Neither do the slim 160 GB and 320 GB models. The newest 500 GB PS3 model does not Play PS2 games either. All PS3 models play PlayStation 1 Games and do so through software emulation.

When your game discs get old and scratched they stop working. If your PS2 played the games and has stopped playing them look at the appearance of the discs surface and if it looks scratched it's a likely solution

The ps3 may have gotten messed up somewhere within making it or the scripting. therfore it thinks it is a ps2

Sounds like the emotion engine for the PS2 is working and the software for the PS3 is not. I bet you have a the 20 or 60 GB model and not a partially Software based emulation 80 GB model.

Here are some questions to ask yourself:

1. Is the disk scratched?

Yes - Buy the same PS2 game, or try a new one.

No - (see question 2)

2. Did I try a lens cleaning disc to clean the lens?

Yes - (see question 3)

No - Try it.

3. How long have I had the PS2, and how often have I played on it?

I've had it for a long time and play it a lot - Your system is old and worn down. Get a new PS2 system.

I've had it for a long time and seldom play it - Because it's unused, dust settles inside the system and ruins the parts.

I've had it for a short time and play it a lot (and it works really well) - Phone SCEA and tell them your problem.

I've had it for a short time (and it doesn't work well) - Take the system back to the retailer and voice your problem. If the warranty expired, get a new PS2 system.

The company could have gotten the brand wrong, and it is really a PS1.

If that is not the case, your PS2 might be broken, and it will need to be taken to a electronics specialist.
