In all manufactured items, there is a chemical that is released in trace amounts, and is harmless to all humans and imperceptible to most humans. Dogs, however, CAN detect these minute quantities of this chemical, and it has an effect similar to catnip (in that it alters the dog's brain chemistry). This chemical's effect makes the dog think that the item in question is on fire, so they try to put it out by peeing on it.

There are three possible theories. 1: You did something to upset your cat, and now he is getting back at you. This is very unlikely unless you have been extremely mean to him. 2: His litterbox is full, and he is uncomfortable going inside of it, so he pees on your stuff instead. Check his litterbox at least every three days and clean it out. If you don't have a litterbox, I would suggest getting one soon. 3: This is the most probable. He is probably claiming your stuff as his, as cats both rub against and pee on things that that want and "claim as theirs". When he rubs up on you, he is showing that he loves you and that you are "his." Hopefully he doesn't pee on you, though... Hope this helped! (If it is serious, I would suggest talking to a pet trainer)

"It means it's time to get new stuff." Heh, very smart. Your dog either has a potty problem, or more likely, just wants to mark his territory. If your dog is female, she just needs to be pottytrained. Nothing serious.

There can be various reasons.

It usually means they don't know not to. They must be trained to learn the right places and times to go. Find a book on puppy training for good training tips for a dog who has not yet been house trained.

It can be a sign of a urinary tract infection that needs to be treated, especially if they are already house trained and have not done it before. This is also something that happens to older dogs and worsens with age. There are medicines the vet may be able to give that can help with this problem of older dogs.

Sometimes they're overly excited or afraid. Younger dogs especially can do this. Thunderstorms and other loud noises can induce it in fearful dogs, too.

If another dog has peed in that same place, they smelled it and thought they were using the "proper facilities". If one dog pees on the floor you must immediately clean it up and then use either a vinegar water wash to remove the hidden odors deep in the carpet fibers and pad, or use a commercially available enzyme pet accident product such as Nature's Miracle (available at pet supply stores) and follow the label directions exactly.

Dogs will do this if they want everyone to know that they claim the house as their territory. Dogs of both sexes will do this, but intact male dogs may mark their territory this way more often (and can be very sneaky about it). Often when they are neutered this stops.

When dogs are very afraid, the way some get when they hear a thunderstorm, fireworks or other loud noises, they might not be able to control their urination just out of fear (people do this sometimes, too) or they may hold it in longer than they should because they don't want to go outside where the loud noises are coming from. If they wait too long, then like us, they may "pee their pants". There are special dog coats that really help with this. One brand is called Thunder Shirts (there are other brands). It makes them feel more secure, most fearful dogs do much better when these are used.

Dogs will urinate to indicate submission. If they are young, ill, old, or afraid of the alpha "head" dog, meeting a new dog, threatened by a pack of dogs, or being scolded or hurt by an angry person, they do this submissive behavior to beg not to be hurt, showing you they are no threat to you. Dogs demonstrate submission by peeing (regressive puppy behavior), and by getting small and low to the ground without making eye contact. They will lower their tails between their legs and lower their heads and ears to be small and non-threatening to the leader. They often will lie down on their backs with their belly exposed to show they are not trying to challenge the leader.

There are also specific other conditions, diseases, and injuries that can cause this. If it continues, you should have the vet examine the dog to be sure there is not a medical reason for the urination that could be relieved with treatment.
