A few things to check:

1. Does the motherboard / BIOS detect the hard drive?

2. Is it formatted? The Linux installer should be able to see it, but it will be unable to mount it or use it.

3. If it is formatted, have you tried using it? Mounting file systems involves a command like:

mount /dev/sdc3 /media/disk-2

You will need to create a folder called "disk-2" at /media in order to mount it there.

4. If you are using a SATA drive, does your distro support them? Older distros, such as ones from before 2004, and Damn Small Linux, will not support these properly.

When you install a new hard disk into a computer, internal or external it may not show up as a drive letter until the drive has been partitioned and formatted.

To partition and format your new hard disk, open up the control panel, go into administrative tools, computer management. In the computer management screen you will find a section for disk management. You can use this to partition and format any unallocated space.

Note: Be very careful poking around in the disk management settings. One of the disks listed there is your primary hard disk with windows & all your favorite stuff saved on it. A few wrong clicks in these menus, and you lose everything. ONLY partition and format if you find unallocated space or if you are VERY SURE you are clicking on the right disk. You have been warned!

Note: When you do format your hard disk, be sure to use the quick format. The not-quick format isn't any better and on modern-sized hard disks takes forever.

If your hard disk does not show up in the disk management either. Your problem isn't with windows, your motherboard bios is not seeing the hard disk. Check all your cable connections again, ensure your power supply is up to the task (400w or more if you have 2 hdds) and make sure your BIOS are configured to enable the appropriate PATA/SATA channel.

How do you format a not recognize external hard disk?

If the computer cannot recognize an external hard disk, it would be virtually impossible to format it. There must be a problem with the hard disk. Consider replacing it or taking it ti where you bought it.

What does it mean when your computer says hard drive not found?

The best way, I think to answer that is to define what a computer (or in this case the motherboard of the computer) needs to find or identify a hard disk. A hard disk needs a power source, a connector to attach it to the motherboard, and a controller to talk to the microprocessor of the computer. If any of these things fail the hard disk will not function and the computer will not recognize it. In general when you see the message "hard disk not found" its because the computer can't recognize the hard disk. This can be from a bad cable (that connects the hard disk to the motherboard), no power to the hard disk, or a failed controller. In my experience, its usually a bad cable but there are times when the hard disk itself will fail. Generally, hard disk cables are far more fragile than hard disks.

How do connect linovo hard disk to hp mini leptop laptop and?

Get a USB adaptor.

You spilled pop on your laptop and now the only thing you could get out was your hard drive is there anyway for you to get the files off without getting a new laptop?

Yes. You can get an external hard drive case and put the hard drive in that to convert it to an external USB hard disk.Your laptop would have had a 2.5 inch hard disk. Make sure you find an external hard drive case which accepts laptop-sized 2.5 inch hard disk. Also you must keep in mind what type of interface your hard disk uses. If it is SATA, you will need a case which supports it, as opposed to regular ATA-100 (now being called PATA).Put your laptop's old hard disk into that external hard drive case & bingo, its now an external USB disk that you can plug into any computer! Another answer Alternatively, you can purchase a USB to IDE cable and temporarily connect the drive to a desktop computer to retrieve your files.

Whenever I put a disk in my laptop's disk tray and close it my laptop doesn't recognize the disk so whats wrong?

you probably need to clean the disc of fingerprints or grease. If that does not work then try restarting your computer then putting the disc back in or go into your drives and see if theres a virus or something is wrong.
