It is a X-linked recessive condition and therefore females have another X chromosome (from their father) to protect them while males inherit the mutated X-chromosome from their mothers and are affected. Males with Lesch-Nyhan typically do not reproduce and therefore do not pass on the affected gene to female off-spring, although rare cases have been reported in females (less than 10). It is believed that these instances occurred due to spontaneous mutations in the paternal gene and were not inherited.
