Well every school kid knows about the 'cold finger' separation technique. Iodine changes from a solid straight to a gas when heated. It sublimes. So heat the sand/iodine mixture in a pyrex tube or flask which has a 'cold finger' inserted. The hot iodine gas will rise, hit the cold finger and form pure solid iodine crystals on the cold finger.
