Two things generally happen on the Chevy trucks based on my many visits to repair shops as i drop off parts. 1) the resistor wire breaks (seldom) 2) the pin that holds the float arm breaks - 95% of the time.
I just got through this exact same problem. Chances are the pin on the float arm is broken. In talking to my local mechanic, he gets about one of these in a week. The problem is that the float arm and fuel pump are all one unit, a VERY poor design. The list price of a fuel pump is around $450.00, I suggest looking on line to take about $150 off of the price of the part.
However, labor is a different issue. The fuel tank needs to be dropped, where the fuel pump is not so conveniently located between the floor of the vehicle and the top of the tank.
Now, not that I am trying to make things worse, if your fuel gauge stops working, the chances are that your fuel pump is going to be going out soon. Listen for a whiny whirring sound at the rear of your vehicle while it is running. It is usually more audible at the back drivers corner. If you hear the whine, start saving your pennies.
The check gauge light on a 2000 Chevy blazer could be several things. The oil could be low or the other fluids may be low. Take notice of all the gauges. One or more may be out of its normal parameter notifying you there is a problem.
