this was revealed in a manga, the first offspring of a pure blooded saiyan with a non sayian (in this case human or tuffle) will have a tail, the other explanation is that both vegeta and goku were super sayians when they got their women pregnant, so the super sayian gen dominated while the tail gen got suppressed.

∙ 13y agoGohan has a tail because he is a half-saiyan. It seems that half-saiyans may have tails at random; neither Trunks nor Goten had a tail.
