Many musicians frequently take gigs in a variety of places. Some travel. Agents or companies will arrange schedules. Thus, many musicians from New Orleans simply started in New Orleans and stayed with a vaudeville group until it reached New York. Since New York was a large city, musicians would have a number of places to play. At that point a number would not sign up to continue on a tour or join a different one.
