Like all species in an ecosystem algae are indicators of the health of the system.

Lets examine each case:

No Algae: Sterile water in a natural environment often indicates the presence of toxic materials or pH problems

Slight Algae Growth: one species: A slight growth of algae limited to just one species may indicate the presence of some pollution so that only hardy species can exist

Slight Algae Growth: Several Species: A diverse growth of algae indicates normal conditions

Prolific Algae Growth: Eutrophication (high levels of nutrients in the water) inddicates polluting sources contributing phosphares and nitrogen compounds

Algal Blooms: Extremely high levels of nutrients lead to clumps of algae which die and acccumulate leaving floating mats of decomposing algae.

Explain how the presence of algae can indicate either pollution or productivity of a body of water?

The presence of algae can indicate either pollution or productivity in a body of water because algae has a very narrow niche, meaning that they can only live in specific areas.

Which algae is pollution indicator?

Lichens are known as pollution indicator.

Does soil erosion cause water pollution?

Yes. Soil erosion causes water pollution. The pollution from mud in the water is nowhere near as dangerous to people as the pollution from sewage. Likewise, excess fertilizer runoff creates algae blooms which poison people. Some health food nuts claimed blue green algae is good for you. Many cattle have died from drinking water from ponds filled with blue green algae. Fertilizer drained from farm fields into ponds caused the poisonous algae to grow. The pollution caused by soil erosion is bad. The pollution caused by fertilizer runoff is worse.

What are some effects of soil erosion?

Loss of soil productivity, river, lake, and water supply over-sedimentation , and algae blooms.

What is phosphate pollution?

Phosphate pollution is a condition where there is too much phosphorus in lakes and streams, as a result from poor timing on fertilizer application. In some cases, phosphorus can leach from grass clippings to create the same effect. When too much phosphorus enters lakes and streams, it can cause algae blooms. Algae blooms block sunlight from reaching the fish and other aquatic plants, and the aquatic life dies.
