The death of thousands of people and the destruction of a billion dollar office complex is a big deal, but then, lots of people die for various reasons every day, and lots of property is destroyed. This was more than just a loss of life and property. The real problem is that if the US did not respond vigorously to an attack of this nature, that would demonstrate that the US either is unable to defend itself or does not have the will to defend itself and therefore is defenseless, and we know that when a nation is defenseless, other nations or criminal organizations will be only too happy to take advantage of that vulnerability. Or to put it another way, if you don't defend your nation, it will be taken away from you.
