Ascencion day is remembered by Christians because that is the day that our Savior Jesus ascended into heaven. He had opened the gate of heaven, and now he was there to welcome all the people who had died.
Because it was when Jesus went back to Heaven. If he never ascended, then we would be quite hopeless, because he needs to be in Heaven.
