Edmonton really isn't all that famous. It's far less famous than other cities like Toronto or Chicago or New York or Dubai or Paris or Los Angeles, for instance. Many people don't even know where Edmonton is, let alone heard of this city.
However, it is home to a couple famous sports teams, most notably the Edmonton Oilers and Edmonton Eskimos, and it has seen its fair share of celebrities (Oprah Winfrey, Bob Barker, for instance) and has been the host city of the Canadian Country Music Awards and hosted the world-"famous" (as in, broadcast world-wide) bike race similar to Tour de France being Tour of Alberta last month (Sept. 2013), so you could say those are reasons for Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to hold the "famous" card for a little while.
