Jesus' birth was special in that it was God becoming flesh in order to die for the sins of the whole world. The incarnation, as it is called, was an essential prerequisite for the redemption on the cross of Calvary.
Not only does it demonstrate God's care and love for us but it also helps us know that He understands us since he walked among us. He did anyway, since He made us, but it helps us realize it.

It would seem that within the morally purified Christian imaginative world this long-established belief in a supernatural birth would automatically translate into belief in a virgin birth."
