After the first man and women broke their relationship with God, by disobeying God, it has been God's way for a person to sacrifice an animal - often a lamb - to maintain their relationship with God. When God chose the nation of Israel to be His representative on earth God gave them a sacrificial system to atone for people's sin.
However Jesus came to earth lived and died as the "lamb of God". That is, Jesus was a sacrifice for sin and people who believe in Him will not have to face the consequences of their sin. In this way Jesus was a gift from God.
People no longer have to sacrifice animals to restore their relationship with God when they sin. Jesus' death is accepted by God as a sacrifice for all sin.
