The story starts in the first week of August when three things happen on the same day. The first is the arrival of Mae Tuck in the Treegap woods, which were owned by the Foster family. The second is the arrival of the man in the yellow suit at the Foster's home. The third is when Winnie Foster decides to run away; she is tired of her family's strictness and wants to live in complete freedom. She decides to run away at dawn the next day. Her pondering is interrupted by the arrival of the man in the yellow suit, who asks if her family owns these woods.

treegap
The Tucks helped Mae escape from the prison, by them coming up with a plan to help escape Mae. To look for what they did is go to Chapter 24-25 and it explains how the Tucks helped Mae escape from the prison.
Mae and Tuck returned to Treegap but it was not the Treegap they remembered. The roads were blacktop, the woods were gone and there was a gas station where the Foster's house had been all those years ago. Their horse drawn wagon got many stares. They passed by a new jail with a police car outside of it and made their way to a diner. Tuck talked to the waiter, asking about the woods. The waiter explained a storm had come through about three years before and the woods caught on fire. After that, it had to be bulldozed. Tuck asked about a spring in the woods, but the waiter knew nothing about it. After eating, Mae went shopping and Tuck went for a walk. They had both seen the cemetery as they arrived in town......
When Mae pulled the guns trigger the constable came riding through the woods on a horse and he saw everything other than what the man in the yellow suit was doing to Winnie.
Harmful events didn't harm the Tucks. For example, Pa shot himself, Jesse fell out of a tree, Pa got bitten by a snake, Jesse was poisoned, Mae cut herself, and hunters accidentally shot their horse.... However, They were not at all harmed.
