Mickey Mouse was originally drawn to replace the character of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. A mouse was chosen because it could be easily adapted from the earlier character and still have many of the same characteristics. Legend has it that Walt Disney was also inspired to draw the mouse because of a childhood pet.
