NASA is not sending astronauts anywhere except Earth orbit. There are no plans to colonize the moon, nor is there a rational reason to do so, nor is it economically feasible to do.

I am not exactly sure about NASA and all of that. But, I know 12 men have walked on the moon.

They sent cameras and microphones to the moon with the astronauts and used radio to stranmit the signals back the receiving stations on Earth.
While on the moon the astronauts lived in their lunar module.
The last time a human has landed on the moon was in 1971. Since no NASA astronauts have landed on anything from that day on, astronauts are mostly carried by a space craft throughout their journey.
