Why is anything named what it is?...its just what they decided to call it....why is France named France?

The modern Irish word Éire is derived from the Old Irish Ériu going back to the Celtic name for Ireland *Iveriú. It was also the name of a goddess

Northern Ireland is not called Ulster. Some people mistakenly use the term, but Ulster and Northern Ireland are not the same. Ulster is one of 4 Provinces on the island of Ireland. In 1922 Ireland was partitioned to form the Free State then later Republic of Ireland, and Northern Ireland. Three of Ulster's counties are in the Republic of Ireland and the other 6 are in Northern Ireland. So Northern Ireland forms most of Ulster, but not all of it, so they are not the same thing.
