He was against slavery, yet he owned slaves. He outlawed slavery in the first draft of the constitution, but some representatives from the south would not sign and ratify it. So he had to rewrite the constitution. It is believed that the first draft was written in 1774, but that it was changed and not rattified and signed until July 4,1776.
