A bad word is just a bad word because they are uncomfortable to say. It is not the fault of the word, but of the society that has issues with what the word is talking about. Often this is religion. People get uptight about words which they think are special religious words, and should not be uttered outside of some sanctified place. In the United States it is more often the functioning of the human body, especially its digestive and reproductive systems. Americans also have issues with racism so that certain racial epithets become "bad words" which can only be uttered by people of the race they refer to (the notorious n-word is a prime example.)

Bad words are considered inappropriate or offensive based on societal norms and values around language use. These words can carry negative connotations, offensive meanings, or be associated with harmful behaviors, which is why they are deemed unsuitable for polite or formal communication.
