Computer chips are built on a slice of silicon. Silicon forms the basis of transistors which make up a complete circuit. The circuit is photo etched onto the silcon forming complex circuits containg transistors, resistors, capacitors and diodes.

The silicon is grown as a single crystal. The crystal is then sliced into thin wafers, onto which the circuit is etched. These resemble a sliced potato or CHIP.
