The flute is in the woodwind section because it was made of wood when it was originally developed. The flute continued to be made almost exclusively of wood until the 19th century, when metal-bodied instruments began to become popular. Even so, many modern flute players use a metal body with a wooden head, feeling that it makes a much better tone than the all-metal instruments.

This is a much easier question, by the way, than why the french horn, which was never wood, is included in the woodwind quintet!

You blow through them.

--I like that answer, but more accurate:

"brass" instruments have an obvious answer: they're made of brass! (mostly) But most people don't call them by their official name which is "brass-wind" implying that you use air to play them. So to say "you blow through them" isn't complete.

"woodwinds" consist of Clarinets, Sax family, Flutes, Oboes, Bassoons, English horns, among many other interesting instruments. Most of these use "reeds" which are made of cane wood, and therefore it's easy to say that they are "woodwinds". The flute, of course, is purely metal. So why "woodwind"? It was originally made of wood. Metal flutes are actually considered "modern".

and besides that, what other category would they fall under? "silver wind"? They'd be all alone :)

It is considered a woodwind instrument because the flute used to be made of bamboo. Bamboo is wood and a wind instrument is an instrument that you blow through,
