In a fraction, the bottom number tells how many pieces the whole thing was cut up into,

and the top number tells how many of the pieces were taken.

If you cut up the whole thing into any number of pieces, and then take the same number

of pieces, you have taken the whole thing.

The line in a fraction can be read as "divided by." 3/3 is actually 3 divided by 3 which equals 1.
