Remove the flame's heat/oxygen/fuel supply. Oxygen could be removed by pouring water on it (do not do this for burning liquids like oil). A good way is to use a fire EXTINGUISHER.

Sounds like you are hearing lifter noise. If this engine has solid lifters, then they can be adjusted to remove most of the noise. If it has hydraulic lifters, try pouring one can of Seafoam Cleaner in the crankcase with the oil. Seafoam can be purchased at most auto parts stores. Drive the car for 500 miles and then change the oil & filter. Repeat if necessary. This may or may not help.
