because candidates for this degree in the 14th century were likened to candidates for knighthood who were also called bachelors or bachelers by the late 13th century there is some difference of opinion tho as to exactly why the first bachelers were called by this name or how it came to be it could have come from the word baculum which is the stick they used for practicing sword fighting or it could have come from the word baccalaris meaning vassal & or baccalaria meaning the plot of land the vassal worked & several other origins have been suggested too but bachelors as candidates for marriage came a bit later than bachelors as candidates for degrees
