Baptism is considered very important to the Catholic Church because it's the route to salvation and in-order to wipe out the original sin one needs to get baptized. It's a sacrament when you bond with the Holy Spirit.

When we become baptized we are welcomed into the church community and we are blessed with chrism and oil. The Holy Spirit comes upon us.

Roman Catholic AnswerBaptism is necessary as without you one has no eternal life, Baptism is the initial sacrament that must be received to receive any of the others. Further, in the normal course of things, as set up by Our Blessed Savior, there is no salvation without Baptism. Baptism removes original sin from the soul and makes one a child of God.

Roman Catholic AnswerThe Sacrament of Baptism is important as it is the normal way in which salvation is begun in men. "[Jesus Christ] explicitly asserted the necessity of faith and Baptism, and thereby affirmed at the same time the necessity of the church which men enter through Baptism as through a door." CCC 846

from the Catechism of the Catholic Church:1257 The Lord himself affirms that Baptism is necessary for salvation. (Cf. Jn 3:5) He also command his disciples to proclaim the Gospel to all nations and to baptise them. (cf. Mt 28:19-20; cf. Council of Trent (1547) Denzinger-Schonmetzer, Enchiridion Symbolorum, definitionum et declarationum de rebus fidei et morum {1965} 1618; Lumen Gentium 14; Ad gentes 5) Baptism is necessary for salvation for those to whom the Gospel has been proclaimed and whom have the possibility of asking for this sacrament. (Cf. Mk 16:16) The Church does not know of any means other than Baptism that assures entry into eternal beatitude; this is why she takes care not to neglect the mission she has received from the Lord to see that all who can be baptized are "reborn of water and the Spirit." God has bound salvation to the sacrament of Baptism, but he himself is not bound by his sacraments.
