You can lift up and roll the manhole cover away. It will not fall into the hole.

Man hole covers are round so that the cover cant fall into the hole no matter what angle it is oriented at as the diameter is equal around the entirety of the circle. This would also work for an equilateral triangle but it would make it less comfortable when climbing in.
Square drinking glasses better than round ones for three reasons: (1) You can get a better grip on a square glass. (2) You can drink out of the corner, if you wish. (You benefit from the "pitcher effect" and don't' have to open your mouth as wide.) (3) They are more stylish! Things could be square or rectangular, but with a round cover, the cover cannot fall into the hole in any position. With a square or rectangular cover, there is a way to situate the cover so it partially covers the hole and then can fall in. Not so with the circular one.
