If the switch is "closed" both wires should be HOT - with switch open one wire should go COLD-- if not defective switch
i am not sure you mean brake lights or tail lights. If brake lights don't work. You have to check out a brake light switch,(it conects to your brake pedal) make sure both wires are conected to the switch. And if tail lights don't work, you have to replace a head light switch.(where you turn your head light on and off)
Next i'd check the fuses. If thei're all good, find out, where your brake light switch is located. If it's a pressure-switch, it's most likely build to the main brake cylinder. A mechanically switch you'll find somwhere near the brake pedal. Bridge the switch by connecting both wires, if the light works now, replace the switch.
make sure FUSE is good- make sure there is 12 Volts on both side of the Brake Light Switch- the brake light wires run THROUGH the steering column-Make sure 12 Volts are on the in & out brake wires.ASSUMING that BOTH bulbs are good & have good GROUNDS.
It' likely, if bulbs are OK that the turn signal switch is burned out. If the switch fails, it won't allow the brake light signal through to the brake light wiring. Go to:http://www.2carpros.com/first_things/no_brake_lights.htm for the 4 page analysis. See: "(American Car) Both Lower Brake Lights Not Working" To determine if the switch is bad test the incoming and outgoing current. If brake light switch power is present at the turn signal switch but not at any outgoing brake light wires, the turn signal switch has probably failed. This is a Buick design issue because keeping your foot on the brake or if the brake switch sticks keeping the brake lights on, the circuit will fail due to amperage overload.
the brake light switch is behind the brake pedal just adjust it all the way out and brakes will come back on switch generally will not go bad but my crx and mr2 both have needed adjustments if the switch is bad go to radio shack and buy a momentary pushbutton clamp it to the same pillar switch over both wires and let there be brake lights luckily by 98 civic hasn't need this yet but im burning threw transmissions like it was fun to swap them. anyone else?
Brake light switch near brake pedal
with the park lights on both left and right side are lite. but when the brake is applied the right brake lights up and the left goes out(doesn't light up)
If both are inoperative check the fuse, and the brake light switch.
your brake light switch is probably out
* Brake light switch * Shorted or Broken wires between fuses and bulb sockets * Poor connection in light socket ... clean them out and put a little vaseline on them
If both brake light bulbs fail to come on when the brake is depressed I'd check first to see if there may be a fuse that controls the brake light circuit. If there is no fuse and/or the fuse appears to be okay, the most likely culprit is a faulty brake light switch. This switch is located up and behind the brake pedal. There is a plunger that moves in and out acting as a switch when the brake pedal is depressed. It is this switch which possibly may be the culprit.
Defective brake light switch.
